A globe valve uses a movable disc against a stationary ring seat to regulate, throttle, or stop flow. Unlike gate valves, globe valves offer excellent throttling characteristics and are widely used in steam, condensate, hot water, oil, and gas lines where flow control is needed.
Gate valves are designed for on/off isolation with minimal pressure drop when fully open. Globe valves are designed for throttling — the flow path through the body creates higher pressure drop but allows precise flow regulation. Globe valves are preferred where flow control is required.
