An angular contact bearing has its raceways offset at a contact angle (typically 15°, 25°, or 40°), which lets it carry much higher axial loads — but only in one direction per bearing, so they are often used in matched pairs for two-directional axial load.

Angular contact bearings handle axial loads significantly better than deep groove bearings, due to their contact-angle raceway design. For pure or combined heavy axial loading — such as in pumps, compressors, and machine tool spindles — angular contact bearings (often paired back-to-back or face-to-face) are the standard choice.
